From Middle High German triuwe, from Old High German triuwi (“true”), from Proto-Germanic *triwwiz (“true, faithful”). Cognate with German treu, Dutch trouw, Saterland Frisian trjou, English true, Icelandic tryggur, Swedish trygg, Gothic 𐍄𐍂𐌹𐌲𐌲𐍅𐍃 (triggws).
