  1. a frost heave [since 1892]
    • 1899 February 21, “Den senaste tågurspårningen i Norrland. [The latest train derailment in Norrland]”, in Dagen, page 3:
Då tåget nr 82 på söndagen ankom till Bollnäs, anmälde föraren å sagda tåg, att omkring 4 km. söder om Ljusdal någon felaktighet å banan - antagligen tjälknöl - förefunnes, hvarför föraren å tåget nr 263 i Ljusdal erhöll order att gå fram med varsamhet, hvilket synes hafva blifvit iakttaget, då icke någon värre skada egt rum.
When train number 82 arrived in Bollnäs on Sunday, the driver on said train reported a possible issue with the track, likely a frost heave, approximately 4 km south of Ljusdal. Consequently, the driver of train number 263 in Ljusdal was instructed to proceed with caution, and it appears that this instruction was followed, as no significant damage occurred.
    • 2006, Gunnar Sandin et al., “Orsa-Härjeådalen, järnväg med startsvårigheter [Orsa-Härjeådalen, a railway with initial difficulties.]”, in Spår, page 47:
Invigningen fick därför anstå nästan ett halvår, till den 15 juli, och därmed skulle man hinna både åtgärda alla tjälknölar och måla stationshus och banvaktsstugor.
The inauguration was therefore postponed by almost half a year, until July 15, allowing time to both address all frost heaves and paint station buildings and signalman's cottages.
  2. (food) a dish of Norrlandic origin consisting of frozen meat (usually moose) roasted at a low temperature for around 10-12 hours and then marinated in a seasoned brine, somewhat similar to roast beef [since 1983]
