Etymology

Traditionally considered a derivative of tikti (to fit, suit); however, newer theories implicitly reject this hypothesis and instead compare the word to Proto-Germanic *þingjaną (to believe), whence Middle High German dingen (id).[1] Compare Latvian ticēt.
