Etymology

Ultimate origin is unknown. Possibly a Mediterranean Wanderwort. Orel reconstructs Proto-Albanian *tserā, which he relates to thërrmoj (to crumble) and thërrime (crumb). Moreover, Demiraj considers this word akin to Latin cicer (chickpea), Old Armenian սիսեռն (siseṙn, chickpea) and maybe Ancient Greek κριός (kriós, a kind of chickpea), from an Proto-Indo-European *(ḱi-)ḱer- (pea).
