thất thiệt

Vietnamese

Etymology

Sino-Vietnamese word from 失實, with the Central-Southern reading of the second character.

Some dictionary definitions seem to suggest that the second is not from (shí), but the homophonous thiệt (mistreated, getting the short end of the stick), however, even if that is the case, there would still be obvious contamination from the Sino-Vietnamese morpheme.

This is the only case where a Sino-Vietnamese compound with thiệt became widely adopted by all dialects.
