Inherited from Ottoman Turkish تكمه اتمق[1] or تكمه آتمق (tekme atmaḳ, to give a kick),[2] from تكمه (tekme), deteriorated from تپمه (tepme) or دپمه (depme),[3] equivalent to compound of tekme (a kick) + atmak (to throw), literally to throw a kick.
