Equivalent to synd (“sin”) + flod (“flood”). From German Sündflut, a reinterpretation of Sintflut (still the standard form in German) after the word Sünde (“sin”) (compare also Dutch zondvloed). The form Sintflut contains an obsolete prefix sin- (“ever”).
