From Late Latin subrogātiō, from sub- + rogātiō (“inquiry, request”); equivalent to sub- + rogation.

1. (law) Substitution of a different person in place of a creditor or claimant with respect to certain rights and duties.

   Subrogation is a staple element of the casualty insurance business.
