From a Vulgar Latin root *stancus, from a contraction of Vulgar Latin *stānticus (“tired”), from Latin stāns, stantis. Compare Aromanian stãngu, also Old Italian mano stanca (“left hand”); cf. also the etymology of Italian manco (“left; originally 'maimed', 'faulty' 'imperfect'”).
