From Proto-Albanian *tšārnā, from pre-Albanian *kʷērsneh₂, from Proto-Indo-European *kr̥snós (“black”) (compare Lithuanian kir̃snas, Russian чёрный (čórnyj), Pashto [script needed] (kī́n, “left”)). Compare also Romanian cioară; Aromanian cioarã, tsoarã; Friulian çore; Tarantino ciola: Neapolitan and Sicilian ciaula.
