Etymology
There are multiple possible etymologies:
- From Proto-Slavic *selo, from Proto-Indo-European *sel-.[1]
- From Proto-Slavic *sědlo with loss of medial d and different outcome of Lechitic umlaut (instead of expected *siadło) under the influence of siodło and село (selo), cf. Długosiodło (see WSJP and Derksen).
- Borrowed from East Slavic.[2]
