siġill

Maltese

Etymology

Eventually from Latin sigillum. The word may be a simple borrowing from Italian sigillo (seal). However, it is also possible that it was inherited from Arabic سِجِلّ (sijill, scroll) and only re-adopted the sense “seal” under Italo-Romance influence.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /sɪˈd͡ʒɪll/

Noun

siġill m (plural siġilli)
