siġill
Maltese
Etymology
Eventually from Latin sigillum. The word may be a simple borrowing from Italian sigillo (“seal”). However, it is also possible that it was inherited from Arabic سِجِلّ (sijill, “scroll”) and only re-adopted the sense “seal” under Italo-Romance influence.
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /sɪˈd͡ʒɪll/
