Etymology
Uncertain.[1] May be from Proto-Indo-European *(s)krew-t- or *(s)kroy-t-, extended from *(s)ker- (“to cut”). Probably cognate with Proto-Germanic *skraudaną (“to cut up, shred”) (whence Old High German scrōtan).[2] Compare also scrūpus.
