From Ottoman Turkish سوپورمك (süpürmek), from Old Turkic [script needed] (sipir-), from Proto-Turkic *sipür-. Cognate with Azerbaijani süpürmək, Chuvash шӑпӑр (šăp̬ăr, broom).
