Per Brückner, the word is native and cognate with Czech roup (“pinworm”), Latvian rupjš (“coarse, rough”), Lithuanian raupas (“pock”), raupsai (“leprosy”), rupùs (“coarse, rough”), rùpūžė (“toad”), rūpėti (“to concern”).[1]
