  1. Any of several species of birds, the males having a brilliant patch of metallic red on the throat.
    1. A ruby-throated hummingbird (Archilochus colubris).
    2. A Siberian rubythroat (Calliope calliope) or white-tailed rubythroat (Calliope pectoralis),of genus Calliope (syn. Luscinia).
    3. A ruby-throated bulbul (Rubigula dispar, syn. Pycnonotus dispar).
