From re- + nifler (“to irritate, annoy”), from the same Germanic root as Italian niffo, niffa (“snout”); related to Low German Niff (“nose, mouth, bill”), Dutch neb (“nose, beak”), English neb (“nose, beak, face”). More at neb.
