From Middle Breton reiff, Proto-Brythonic *rroɣid (compare Cornish ry (“to give”), Welsh rhoi (“to give”)), from Proto-Celtic *rogīti (“to extend forward”) (compare Old Irish rogaid (“to extend”)), from Proto-Indo-European *h₃roǵéyeti (“to straighten”).
