From Old Irish recht (compare Irish reacht), from Proto-Celtic *rextus, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃reǵ-tus. Cognate with Welsh rhaith (a right, entitlement) and Breton reizh (law, right), and indirectly German Recht (law) (from Proto-Germanic *rehtą (a right, privilege)).
