Methatesized form of earlier *argal linked to Ancient Macedonian ἄργελλα (árgella, “dwelling-place, where [men] bathe while warming up”) and Ancient Greek ἄργιλλα (árgilla, “subterranean house”) (Magna Graecia). All forms likely derive from a substrate word (see ἄργιλλος, white clay).
