Definite origin uncertain. Possibly a substrate word, akin to Albanian rosë (< *ratsa?), or from South Slavic (compare Serbo-Croatian and Slovene raca, Serbian dialect race, Bulgarian ряца (rjaca)); compare also Friulian raze, Occitan rit, Hungarian réce, Romani ratsoy.
