rämna

See also: ramna

Swedish

Etymology

From Old Norse rifna, equivalent to riva (to tear, to demolish) + -na (inchoative suffix). -mn- via the sound change -fn- > -mn-, compare namn (< Old Norse nafn) and somna, lämna, formed in the same manner.

Verb

rämna (present rämnar, preterite rämnade, supine rämnat, imperative rämna)

  1. (violently) crack
    Synonym: spricka
Det känns som att marken under mig rämnar.
It feels like the ground beneath me is crumbling.

Usage notes

Whereas rämna signifies a large, violent crack, spricka signifies a smaller one. Thus, one would say that "marken rämnar" (the ground crumbles), but "glaset sprack" (the glass cracked).
