Etymology
From Old Norse rifna, equivalent to riva (“to tear, to demolish”) + -na (“inchoative suffix”). -mn- via the sound change -fn- > -mn-, compare namn (< Old Norse nafn) and somna, lämna, formed in the same manner.

Usage notes
Whereas rämna signifies a large, violent crack, spricka signifies a smaller one. Thus, one would say that "marken rämnar" (the ground crumbles), but "glaset sprack" (the glass cracked).
