From Latin quinquāgēnārius (“containing 50”) + -an, either directly or via French quinquagénaire, from Latin quīnquāgēnus (“50 each”) + -ārius (“-ary”), from quīnquāgintā (“five tens, fifty”). Cognate with quinquagenary.
