Etymology

From Proto-Albanian *pēpli, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)pel- (to sliver, split off, splinter off), allegedly also the source of Old English popel (pebble). Cognate to (Hes.) Ancient Greek πέλλα λίθος (pélla líthos) and Old High German fels (rock). An Albanian formation with (broken) reduplication.
