poids
French
Etymology
Inherited from Middle French poix, from Old French pois, peis, from Vulgar Latin *pēsum, from Latin pēnsum. Spelling influenced by Latin pondus with the same meaning; both ultimately from the root of pendō (“to weigh”). Doublet of pensum, which was borrowed.
