From Old Galician-Portuguese perrexil, from Old Occitan pere(i)ssil, from Latin petroselinum, from Ancient Greek πετροσέλινον (petrosélinon), from πέτρα (pétra, “stone”) + σέλινον (sélinon, “celery”). Compare Portuguese perrexil and Spanish perejil.
