From Proto-Finnic *pihlä, from Proto-Finno-Ugric *pićlä. Cognates include Finnish pihlaja, Erzya пизёл (piźol), Eastern Mari пызле (pyzĺe), Udmurt палэзь (paleź), Komi-Zyrian пелысь (pelyś) and Northern Khanty писяр (pisjar).
