Etymology

Originally a variant of a regularly derived piedurtne, from the verb piedurt (to pin, to attach (with a pin)), ultimately derived from pie-, from Proto-Indo-European *prey (at, near)) + durt (to stab, prick) + -ne. The original meaning was thus “something attached, sewn (on something else).”[1]
