Possibly from pa- + *dita + -an. The root may be a lost stem according to Potet (2017). See also Malay pelita (lamp), which ultimately came from Classical Persian پلیته (palīta, candle wick). Compare Maranao palita'an (lantern; lamp), Maguindanao palitan (lamp), and Tausug palitaan (lamp).
