opening book (plural opening books)

  1. (chess, literally) A book describing chess openings or giving general opening advice.
  2. (chess engines) A database of openings given to a chess engine to play, either to improve the strength of the engine, to make the engine more interesting to play against, or to create a diversity of games in a chess engine tournament.
