From the Ancient Greek ὀνοκένταυρος (onokéntauros), an alternative form of ὀνοκένταυρα (onokéntaura, “a kind of tailless ape”, “a kind of demon haunting wild places”), presumably from ὄνος (ónos, “ass”) +‎ κένταυρος (kéntauros, “centaur”).
