Etymology
From German unerhört, negation of erhört, past participle of erhören (“grant”). Equivalent to o- + er- + hörd.
Usage notes
- During the 20th century, the original meaning "something never heard before" has gradually been lost, and the word is now used as a generic emphasis (huge, gross, fantastic, horrible)
