normipäivä
Finnish
Etymology
normi + päivä. Likely popularized by the eponymous sketch by the comedy group Kummeli, aired in the 2003/2004 season of their television show.
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /ˈnormiˌpæi̯ʋæ/, [ˈno̞rmiˌpæi̯ʋæ]
- Rhymes: -æiʋæ
- Syllabification(key): nor‧mi‧päi‧vä
Noun
normipäivä
Usage notes
Sometimes used sarcastically, similar to the Kummeli sketch in which three friends, during a night of drinking at a bar, ask each other what kind of day they have tomorrow (a question with the implied meaning of whether it's okay for them to drink that night). All three state they have a normal day, and go on to drink heavily. Finally it's revealed that all three men, now hung over and about to start their workday, have responsible positions that require composure and concentration; a priest, a dentist, and an airline pilot.
