Inherited from Latin nōnāgintā (“ninety”), from earlier *nūnāgintā, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁néwn̥(d)ḱomt (“nine tens”). Compare Occitan nonanta, French nonante; cf. also Spanish noventa.
