From Proto-Inuit *nǝpǝ (“voice, sound, make a sound, is silent”), from Proto-Eskimo *nǝpǝ (“noise, voice, sound”). Compare nipi (“noise”), and nillerpoq (“makes a sound, raises alarm”).
