From Swedish nickel, an abbreviation of German Kupfernickel (a mineral containing copper and nickel), from Kupfer (copper) + Nikolaus (the devil), due to the deceptive silver colour of the relatively valueless ore. Compare kobalts as related to Kobold (goblin).
