Czech

Etymology

From Old Czech nenie, from a supposed earlier *nie, itself a contraction of ne- + je, by adding another negative prefix to make the negative more distinct.[1]

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): [ˈnɛɲiː]

Verb

není

  1. third-person singular present indicative of nebýt

Usage notes

  • This is an irregular negative of je. Other Czech words become negative by the addition of the prefix ne-.
