From a hypothetical form *frumushat, past participle of a verb *frumusha, ultimately from a derivative of Latin formosus. Compare Daco-Romanian înfrumușa (make beautiful, beautify), from frumos, frumusețe, and regional mușat (beautiful, handsome).
