From German Monazit, from Ancient Greek μονάζω (monázō, “be solitary”).

monazite (plural monazites)
- (mineralogy) any of a range of reddish-brown minerals that are mixed phosphates of the lighter rare earth elements lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, samarium, europium, gadolinium and yttrium
Usage notes
The dominant element is denoted by a suffix, e.g. monazite-Ce.
