Borrowed from Javanese ꦩꦼꦤ꧀ꦢꦼꦩ꧀ (mendem, “intoxicated”), from Old Javanese mĕndĕm, mĕṇḍĕm (“drunk”), probably from Tamil மதம் (matam, “honey; madness, frenzy; inebriety, intoxication”), from Sanskrit मद (mada).
