Etymology
From Proto-Albanian *madź(i)ā, from Proto-Indo-European *meh₂ǵ- (“to knead, stroke”). Cognate to Ancient Greek μαγίς (magís, “kneaded mass/substance”), Russian мазь (mazʹ, “salve, ointment”). Demiraj suggests a formation from mâj (“to fatten”) (standard majm).[1]
