Alteration (influenced by mata (“shrub”)) of earlier batafaluga, from (a)batafalua, borrowed from Arabic الْحَبَّةْ الْحُلْوَة (al-ḥabbat al-ḥulwa, “the sweet grain”), from حَبَّة (ḥabba, “grain”) and حُلْو (ḥulw, “sweet”).
