From Proto-Algonquian *maškihkyiwaᐧpowi (“herbal infusion”). Compound of mashkikiw- (“grass, herb, medicine”) + -aaboo (“liquid”). Cognate with Cree ᒪᐢᑭᐦᑭᐊᐧᐱᕀ (maskihkiaypiy, “medicine water, potion, tea”), Fox mashishkiwâpowi (“tea”), Menominee maskīhkiwapoh (“tea”).
