From Proto-Algonquian *maškihkyiwaᐧpowi (herbal infusion). Compound of mashkikiw- (grass, herb, medicine) + -aaboo (liquid). Cognate with Cree ᒪᐢᑭᐦᑭᐊᐧᐱᕀ (maskihkiaypiy, medicine water, potion, tea), Fox mashishkiwâpowi (tea), Menominee maskīhkiwapoh (tea).
