Etymology

The origin is uncertain, but now thought to be derived from Martaban, in Burmese မုတ္ထမ (muthta.ma.), a Burmese port known for its spice exports, through Arabic مَرْطَبَان (marṭabān, spice box), and with influence of pane (bread).
