Via other European languages, ultimately borrowed from Medieval Latin manuscriptum (writing by hand), from Latin manus (hand) and scrīptus, the past participle of scrībō (to write), apparently a calque of Germanic origin (cf. earlier Middle High German hantschrift, hantgeschrift, Old English handġewrit (what is written by hand, deed, contract, manuscript), Old Norse handrit (manuscript)).
