Etymology
From Proto-Finnic *mancik'as. Cognate to Finnish mansikka, Karelian mandžoi and Veps manźikäińe. Possibly derived from mander (“continent”). Compare German Erdbeere and Latvian zemene, both from their respective words for earth.
