From Proto-Vietic. Cognate with Muong Bi mềl, Thavung mɛ:n¹ (Suwilai, 2000). Compare Proto-Katuic *meel (“spleen”) (whence Eastern Katu mêl (“spleen”) and Pacoh mêl (“gizzard”)).
