Etymology

From Proto-Baltic *mīl-, from Proto-Indo-European *mēi-, *mi- (gentle, soft, dear), with an added l. There were apparently competing o and u stems (see Lithuanian forms, and also Latvian dialectal mīls), ultimately replaced by a yu-stem, which became Latvian mīļš. Cognates include Lithuanian mýlas, mylùs, Old Prussian mīls, Old Church Slavonic милъ (milŭ), Russian ми́лый (mílyj), Belarusian мі́лы (míly), Ukrainian ми́лий (mýlyj, sweet, tender, dear), Bulgarian мил (mil, dear, beloved), Czech milý, Polish miły.[1]
