Borrowed from English America, named because venereal disease was introduced to the Marshall Islands by American whaling crews. The name in English was borrowed from New Latin America, feminine latinized form of the Italian forename of Amerigo Vespucci (1454–1512). Amerigo is an Italian name derived from a Germanic language and which is etymologically related to Emmerich. Doublet of Amedka.
