Alternatively from Greek μανία (manía, madness) given the corresponding stress.[1] Note Proto-Indo-European *mey- (to change, exchange). Compare Sanskrit मेनि (mení, revenge, vengeance), Avestan 𐬨𐬀𐬉𐬥𐬌 (maēni, punishment), Old High German mein (incorrect, deceitful), Old Norse meinn (harmful), mein (damage, pity, misfortune).
